Nooks and Crannies

I know what a nook is, but what is a cranny?

In our basement we have poured concrete with a cutout square. I've always considered this a nook.

But I don't know if we have any crannies in the house.

So when someone says "we need to search every nook and cranny," who's assigned to nooks and who's responsible for crannies?

Has anyone ever found what they were looking for in a cranny?
