Nice to see the Globe recognize the achievements of Jimmy Sturr, a talented musician who has few peers in the polka genre.
A Rounder Records recording star, Sturr's ambitious blend of polka/rock is very palatable, even if you think you'd never, ever tune in to Polka. It's not all about getting hammered and dancing in an Oktoberfest haze. Sturr and his band make you stop and listen.
This guy, Jimmy Sturr, has now won 14 Grammy Awards and everyone wonder's how? Here's how:
The Grammy Awards have not been without controversy. Conservative Grammy voting has led to a long list of follies. Many, if not most, of the best recordings of the last thirty years have failed to win a Grammy, including the polka field since its inception in the Grammy Awards in the mid 80's. The Grammy voting is a political and personal popularity contest and not one based upon the best annual talent and recordings. Read the factual book, "Broken Record," the inside story of the Grammy Awards by Henry Schipper, which will attest to the above.
