When someone yells "Geronimo" before jumping off a ledge or a tree branch (or, perhaps, a diving board), what does this mean?
It all started in August 1940, when the Army was training its first paratroopers for World War II combat. The night before their first jump, a group of men watched the film "Geronimo" as a way to relax. The next day, Pvt. Aubrey Eberhardt yelled "Geronimo!" before jumping to show he wasn't afraid.
Obviously, the term caught on. Funny, but when I hear "Geronimo," I think of the former Cincinnati Reds center fielder, Cesar Geronimo.
