OK. I wasn't crazy.
I bought a half-case of the 1999 Leasingham Bin 61 Clare Valley Shiraz in 2002.
At the time, it was one of the best wines I had ever tasted.
I touted this to friends. At key moments with key people, I brought out a bottle and lamented on its taste, power and finesse.
But one night, with my brother-in-law ('sup, Doug), the wine didn't taste so good.
Clearly, this was a case of cork taint (which is why many Australian wineries are using alternative stoppages, like screw tops and plastic).
Now I was down to one bottle.
And I hesitated to bring it out.
So, without the confidence to serve the 1999 Leasingham Bin 61 Clare Valley Shiraz with friends, I opened it myself.
And it was more amazing than when I first tasted it in 2002.
I just had a bad bottle.
Glad I revisited it.
But I wish I was sharing it with someone.
I'd like to drink that wine in New Orleans
