It's a late summer evening at Fenway Park and the sound of New Orleans bounces down Yawkey Way as effortlessly as leaves swirling in the street.
With the soft-handed Mickey Bones rattling his snare and stepping into his bass, baseball fans feel the Cajun heat for a few precious moments as they wait in line for some ballpark grub at El Tiante, Calzini Rossi Pizzeria and the Summer Time Grille.
Sporting Timo on sax, Lee on sousaphone and Grayson on trumpet, the Hot Tamale Brass Band finds its rhythm and groove, creating a soundtrack that transitions Red Sox Nation from its harried work day to a diamond-studded evening rooting for the Local Nine.
With the Original Souvenir Store as its backdrop, the Hot Tamale's stage show is an asphalt sidewalk, with tattered red umbrellas, 9-year-olds with gloves and a guy on stilts wearing a Red Sox jersey tossing balls their way.
As they go into a jazzy version of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," the fans pick up their pace, walking a little faster, heading into the concourse to find their seats to catch Curt Schilling's first pitch.
The music draws them in and it sends them on their way.
Play it again.
These guys are great. I think they've been doing this for 10 years or so.
