Early returns are that new judge Kara Dioguardi brings the eighth season of "American Idol" down, annoyingly coming across as if she has been part of the critiquing panel since the show's inception.
That said, there's always hope for a winter/spring of newfound singing talent. Which is why we watch.
Since "Americal Idol" debuted in America during the summer of 2002, here's how the seasons stack up in order of talent and entertainment.
1. Season 2
By far the best. The Clay Aiken-Ruben Studdard showdown was compelling despite America picking the wrong guy. This was the season that had everyone talking.
2. Season 7
Finally, a rocker wins (David Cook) and beats out some very good competition along the way. David Archuleta was legit and Chikezie had his moments.
3. Season 4
Bo Bice had some amazing performances and broke the show's mold. And America got to meet Carrie Underwood, one of country's biggest acts. We loved Constantine's Freddie Mercury tribute.
4. Season 1
The original deserves credit for starting the ratings phenomenon, but Justin Guarini in the final was a joke. Kelly Clarkson was and is the real deal. But no more movies!
5. Season 3
This one was over early, as Fantasia Barrino was the clear-cut talent from start to finish. But Jennifer Hudson and LaToya London kept things honest. And we loved George Huff.
6. Season 5
Taylor Hicks was visually entertaining, for sure. But you can't see him when you put on the record. And his record sales reflected this. Chris Daughtry finishing fourth was a joke.
7. Season 6
Sanjaya Malakar in the Top 12 almost killed the show's credibility. Some say this was the season AI "jumped the shark." Melinda Doolittle should have been the winner, not Jordin Sparks.
I agree that Season 2 was the best, but I think the Carrie-Bo battle was right up there. I disagree with you on Jordin Sparks. She was the best that season and is a great singer.

Season 6 was the best!
Melinda Doolittle and Jordin Sparks are both talented. You don't need to win a contest to prouved who was the best. Both was.
Melinda Doolittle are really talented and when she sing she's blessing my soul. My number one is Melinda Doolittle in my heart and this won't change.
