Actually, some of us love the silence while we're on hold (and greatly appreciate companies that give us the option of NOT hearing muzak!).

I don't find anything entertaining about the music or messages (ugh) you hear while on hold. It only prolongs the agony of dealing with a company.

The only time silence freaks me out is when I'm all alone in a house in the isolated suburbs or country. THAT is freaky.

But one of the most magical times was the silence during a snowstorm in the country a few years ago. We went out walking on the grounds and it was just amazing.

(The silence extended inside, too, because we lost the satellite, so no TV, no Net.)

Gemmond - the peace after a snowfall is one of the best feelings. Agreed.
